Owerri City - Unpredictable Match and Protest

It may not be safe today as there maybe a clash. Please everyone should stay indoors today

OWERRI: NOW A CITY OF ADSURDITY, CRISIS AND HOOLIGANISM

OWERRI: NOW A CITY OF ADSURDITY, CRISIS AND HOOLIGANISM
By Nwamkpa Modestus

Owerri, a once adjudged  most peaceful state capital in Nigeria is gradually but unfortunately wearing the toga of a city of absurdity, crisis and hooliganism. Since the last Saturday when the popular Ekeukwu Owerri was mowed down by the state Governor in a most bizarre manner, peace has evaporated from the state. There is now palpable anger, bitterness and crisis.
The entire Douglas Road housing the Ekeukwu market have been under siege and fully militarized. Movement in and around the place is now risky and restricted. Traders are counting their losses and gnashing their teeth. Prayer Warriors are invoking the spirit of God for help. Maybe, Native Doctors are also consulting their gods. The family of Ibeanusi whose only son Somtomchukwu was shot and killed cold bloodily are causing that black Saturday and mourning their bereavement.
Again, today Wednesday, pandemonium broke out in Owerri. Crisis erupted within the town. People again were subjected to another round of chaos and battle. Some Youths of Owerri Nche Ise obviously enraged over the alleged brutalization and invasion of their land by some Youths from the Oil producing LGA mobilized their Arsenal and allegedly attacked an Ohaji/Egbema trader apparently in retaliation which reportedly left one of their victims dead.
Expectedly also, there was a counter mobilization and a corresponding retaliation from the opposite direction which led to another unrest and crisis.  In the mist of this melee, innocent people were beaten and injured; properties were destroyed and looted. Above all, the relative peace in the city dangerously degenerated further. The resultant effect was its concomitant tension and anxiety all over the state Capital as people were ran for their dear lives and traders hurriedly closed shops. Families were put into serious fear while calls were anxiously and fearfully placed in curiosity.
In all of these, I personally feel worried because those who make positive change impossible make violent change inevitable.  I knew that the end to that Saturday unholy action of the government was yet to be seen. My innocent mind had been going back and forth in remembrance of that 1996 Otokoto crisis when the state witnessed the raw anger of the people after the killing of the little innocent groundnut seller boy late Master Ikechukwu Okonkwo. I have therefore been fervently supplicating to God never to allow us pass through that horrendous period again.
However, the truth of the matter is that either this government under Governor Okorocha does not take or seek for a sincere advice or it lacks personnel who can boldly advice the Governor. Otherwise, I do not see the sense in trying to adopt the approach that the Governor adopted in demolishing the popular Ekeukwu market last Saturday. There could have been a better way or approach in going about it.
Now for clarity sake, as I have always said, iam particularly not  against any plan of the Governor at modernizing the Ekeukwu market. In fact, I support any genuine plan in modernizing  the market with the view to making it look attractive and curbing criminality around the area. But I am completely against relocating the market entirely from the place to another LGA. Again, I do not support  the idea of forcefully evacuating the Traders without providing a better alternative place.
In the first place, the market is a traditional market and about the only cultural heritage left for Owerri people. It equally provides a sustainable economic base for their Elderly mother and Youths. It will be most unfair to completely remove the market and site it in another LGA.
Every community in Igboland has a market. For instance, you cannot go to Ogboko and remove their traditional market and go and site it in Orlu. Ofcourse, the people must react or resist it. And If you eventually do that, the truth remains that it will never answer Ogboko market again. Therefore, if you remove Ekeukwu market and take it to Akwakuma or Ohi, will it answer Ekeukwu market there?
Again, I consider it preposterous and infantile the argument that the market is being relocated in order to curb criminality around the place. Instead, modernize the market, clear the area of street trading, rehabilitate the roads and criminality would be taken care of.
In government, it is not everything that is right is expedient. While it may appear right to demolish and relocate the market, it is certainly not expedient now to do that because of so many factors. This is rainy season and adequate relocation plan in terms of allocation of the shops to the traders have not been done assuming the traders must leave compulsorily. Also, the excruciating economic situation prevalent in the state does not support such forceful demolition now.
After all, government is for the people and not the people for government. Therefore, every action of the government especially the kind of action under review must be done with the highest level of circumspection and it must be subtle. It shouldn’t be coercive and combative or else you get violent reaction from the people.
Psychologically, human beings are reactive in nature and can angrily resist certain actions that attack their self esteem and economic base. And this was what played out in Owerri today.
Again, why would you carry out such action under a full militarized environment as if there was war in the land? What is even the urgency now?
Anyway, I sue for peace among the Traders and Owerri people. I advise government to move in now to curtail the building up of anger. If possible, let every action in that Ekeukwu market be suspended forthwith pending when all peace building processes are completed.
This is my take.

Imo Politics: IMO PEOPLE  SHOULD APOLOGISE TO OHAKIM & PDP.

IMO PEOPLE  SHOULD APOLOGISE TO OHAKIM & PDP.

Now its clear and will be clearer that Imo people gave a LOADED GUN to a BLOOD THIRSTY GORILLA,  who is now hunting Imo people and her resources. In 2011, we were given the opportunity to choose between life and death. Some of us like IfeanyiCy Njoku, Henry Izuchukwu Ezeogu, Obiwuru IP and so many other social media commentators in our little way shouted the need to discard the propaganda of the "Rev. Fr. story" and look towards a greenner Imo. But Imo leaders were so DEAF. They used all contact and power to oust Gov. Ikedi Ohakim. Chief Martins Agbaso and other leaders prepared this great meal and served it to Imo people. The aroma of the meal was so enticing that our people forgot to check what was served and they ate blindly.

Firstly, Chief Martins Agbaso the "Chef" couldnt swallow his first bite when the poisonous food reacted in his throat. When I heard the sad news how his brother the then Deputy Governor was swept out from office, I was not surprised . Then, gradually over 8900 employed youths were suspended till date. Free Education was the WORD but was it really FREE? Our people were made to believe and love BONDAGE.

Before 2015, social media became MORE active with more writers, commentators and analysts. People with like minds shouted BRING BACK OHAKIM, though he didnt clinch the PDP's Governorship ticket, He supported the PARTY'S CANDIDATE, Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha to redeem Imo people from the dangers ahead. Our people again became gullible with JOB! JOB!! JOB!!! FACTORY! FACTORY!! FACTORY!!! INDUSTRY!  INDUSTRY!! INDUSTRY!!! The emperor once again is enjoying his GAME ON THE THRONE at the cost of every Imolite.

Imo State won the CLEANLIEST state and the same market existed with all business activities on the same location when Chief Ikedi Ohakim was the Governor. Imo people called him names from ONYE OSHI to IKIRI. Remember, when Ohakim was Governor, Owerri was bubbling with activities. A weekend spent outside Owerri was no weekend. The city was full of life, people were happy, no Political assasination, more autonomous communities were created, Development centres fully operational, every Local Goverment Area was well represented both in Goverment house and other parastatals. Power play was fair to both the religious and traditional communities. Youths were employed, there was ZERO agitation from Oil producing Communities because he maintained ISOPADEC structure handed over to him to meet their needs as such there was no need for any AMNESTY PROGRAMME. The House of Assembly was functional and its members were not Ohakim's stooge. His Goverment was never a family affair, I MEAN NEVER.

TODAY OUR GOVERMENT HOUSE IS A FAMILY BUSINESS WHERE A FATHER IS PLANNING TO HAND OVER TO HIS SON, are we now dumb?

WHAT HAPPENED TO AMA JK RECREATION PARK?  WHEN WILL THE MULTIPLE CAR PARK BE BUILT?

IMOLITES IS TIME TO CORRECT THE MISTAKE OF 2011 and 2015. Lets compare IKEDI OHAKIM and Gov. ROCHAS OKOROCHA.

FOR ME ITS JUST COMPARING LIFE AND DEATH. ONE MORE TERM FOR OKIGWE/OHAKIM AND OWERRI WILL HAVE FULL RIGHT TO ASK FOR THEIR TURN.

GOV. OKOROCHA HAS GOOD PLANS FOR US...... IMO TRADERS.

Says Owerri people deceived us.

Following the demolition of the former Eke-Ukwu Owerri Market, Imo traders in the said market have come out in strong terms saying that they never knew that GOV. OKOROCHA meant well for them when he asked them to relocate to the newly gigantic market built for them, considering what they are now seeing on ground than what is being speculating in the State by the enemies of the workaholic Governor of the State.

The revelation came from the traders who besieged the newly gigantic market Ohi in Mbaitoli LGA of the state as they are being allotted shops and spaces to display their goods for the purpose of buying and selling.

traders in their Joyous mood who were seen putting things in order expressed happiness and satisfaction with the decision of the Governor in bringing the market to its present location said that the place is 100% better than its former location, saying that they are satisfied with the way the market is planned which in turn will bring cleanliness and conducive atmosphere for buying and selling.

Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha Says The Death Incidents During Ekeukwu Market Demolition Is A Rumor

Coming from Sam Onwuemeodo
Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, the Imo State Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha still say the incidents surrounding the  removal of Ekeukwu Market, the death of the 10 year old boy that was shot dead is a fake and lie news by his political opponents.

Imo Politics: Nigerians Fuming Over The Ugly Incidents At Ekeukwu Market

Nigerians have lambasted Imo state governor, Rochas Okorocha, over the demolition of Ekeukwu market, Owerri on Saturday. The demolition which recorded death of a 10-year-old boy and two others was described as barbaric.

Former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, has accused Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, of being behind the deaths recorded yesterday at the popular Eke-Ukwu market in Owerri, the state capital.

In a series of tweets, Fani-Kayode rained abuses on Okorocha and insisted that it was not hate speech, when some of his followers labelled his posts as such.

He tweeted: “When will this pot-bellied illiterate, this filthy sodomite, this one-legged ritualist and this ravenous beast stop killing people in Imo?

“Calling a mass murderer a mass murderer,a racist a racist,a bigot a bigot,a monster a monster and a tyrant a tyrant is NOT hate speech.

“It is called speaking truth to power and it is the life-blood of democracy. Anyone that thinks otherwise needs to go back to school.”

Imo Politics: (Ekeukwu Market Demolition) Rochas Okorocha Has The Balls

David Nwaenyi wrote;

"Watching from Abuja. Kudos to you Rochas Pikin. You are doing a good job by bringing the scene to Imo in diaspora.
Abuja is what it is today because of the way El-rufai did his work (without fear or favour).  Owelle is building the Imo State of tomorrow. With a state capital that is capable of competing with any city in the world. Owelle has shown a strong will which his predecessors lacked, or were afraid of 'agbárã' to do. However, most of the leaders whose names are indelible in the history of the world are those who took risks to show will and dared even the gods. Now, the gods will back Owelle for having the 'balls' to do something different. God bless Imo State! God bless Nigeria!!God bless our leaders!!!"

Imo Politics: Who Bewitched Imo - Barr. Ngozi Olehi

Barr Ngozi Olehi Wrote

I have been briefed on the state of affairs in Owerri. I am saddened the more about a picture of Rochas as he was cheerfully hailing himself after the death of GBthese people. I have always said that what is going on in Imo State is not governance.

Do a comparative analysis between Imo State and some countries much smaller than Imo State which also do not produce oil, you will simply agree with me that Imo State is under a siege and the Government represents nothing but a curse.

Even here in Nigeria, you will be ashamed of Imo State if you know the level of transformation in Akwa Ibom, Enugu and Anambra States. In January 2015, 100 youths of Kano State graduated from an Aviation College abroad at the expense of their Government. Kano State Government dazed lawyers at the just concluded Annual Conference of NBA with their wonderful show case session. Rochas hasn't up to 5% of the ideas of that Government.

Our "industrious" Rochas transformed Keke Riders Association to IMO PILOTS and he has been conducting elections for IMO PILOTS. To him, these are terrific achievements for IMO people. We are inundated with awkward claims of free education and 27 general hospitals. We all know the reasons for these drain pipes that were undertaken without even a minimal study.

Please who said that mere scratch on a road and subsequent "painting" of same for one rainy amounts to "massive infrastructural development". The crucial question remains: who bewitched Imo. The people do not know the evil that has befallen them and backwardness Imo has been plunged into.

I shall react to the current war unleashed by Rochas against the Imo people, especially Owerri people.

In the interim, let me rest the foregoing by referring to and relying on the Holy Bible which declares thus:

1. "Woe unto the wicked, it shall be I'll with him; for the reward of his hands shall be given him" Isaiah 3:11

2. "Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil; that put darkness for light, and light for darkness, that put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter". Isaiah 5: 20

3. "Woe unto them that are wise in there own eyes, and prudent in their own sight". Isaiah 5:21.

Unless the God of Heaven intervenes, be it known today that this government has perfected a sordid mischiefs against the people. We need to pray.

Imo Politics: A Shameless Display Of His Usual White Lies, Rt.Hon.Emeka Ihedioha Tells Governor Rochas Okorocha.

"I received with rude shock, sadness and profound regret, the gestapo-like invasion of the EKE-UKWU OWERRE market by heavily armed security agencies and Rochas’ armed militia leading to the unfortunate loss of lives on the orders of Governor Rochas Okorocha.

It is obvious that this action taken in spite of a subsisting retraining court order was not only provocative but orchestrated maliciously to cow, intimidate and forcefully take over Ekeukwu market for obviously selfish objectives. The claim by Gov. Okorocha that his wicked action was motivated by the need to flush out kidnappers and drug dealers is not only hollow but a shameless display of his usual white lies.

His penchant for primitive acquisition of property is well known and clearly at the core of his motive for this act of cowardice. No doubt, thousands of Imo citizens have been thrown out of job, a number of whom may become security risks. The blood of innocent victims of that Black Saturday and the latent consequences of this action will surely hang on his head.

Most unfortunate and regrettable is the fact that Gov. Okorocha has once again usurped and appropriated unto himself the powers and Authority of the Commander -in -Chief of the Armed Forces of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to order the deployment of men of the Armed Forces in matters relating to the Internal Security of the State. Owerri and indeed Imo State is not and was not in a state of war at the time of this action.

I hope that the security high command will take appropriate actions to stem this tide of anomy and bring all culprits to book no matter how highly placed.

Perhaps, this incident may necessitate drawing the attention of the Nation’s Security Agencies of the determination of Gov. Okorocha to flagrantly abuse official privileges in festering his distasteful governance of lawlessness and serial abuse of the well cherished rule of law. The Nigerian Police, Imo State Command is once more reminded of its responsibility to the citizenry particularly in a civil democracy. It cannot continue to be a repressive tool in the hands of Gov. Okorocha and his cohorts.

This reign of terror must not be allowed to take roots in our state because ours is a civilized society.

My heart bleeds for the family of the innocent deceased particularly Mr. Mbanusi, who lost his 10 year old only son (Somtochukwu), in that wicked incident and equally for those who lost their means of livelihood in this period of hardship. In spite   of the provocations, I must urge all of us to maintain the peace and be law abiding.

It is no longer doubtable that Imo needs help and deliverance".

Imo Politics: Ekeukwu Market Demolition -The Blood of An Innocent Child Cries Out

It's very unfortunate that we descend very low to play politics with the life of an innocent child. I saw the pictures of the young boy who was gunned down today and had kept mute to be very sure before saying anything but I've been reading some pro-government writers telling the world that nobody was killed until I ran into Chidiebube Okeoma and Prince Chidi Obi who were close to tears in devastation. Prince Chidi Obi was there when the sister of the dead boy was beating up herself as she lamented the death of her brother. Chidiebube Okeoma even met with the father of the dead child. I later saw pictures and saw the entry point of the bullet into the young boy's head and I ask, must the blood of this child be spilled for a government policy to be carried out? Are these policies supposedly not meant for that little boy's future? Must we play petty and dirty politics over the blood of this young boy to the extend that we deny that it happened forgetting that we have our own children and if Nemesis decides to visit us with our own coin our children may bevome victims tomorrow? So Eke Ukwu have claimed a young life? Our so called future generation killed because of a government policy and somebody is glorifying at the death of this boy. I tell you, this blood spilled today will cry out. It will cry out against our oppressors. It will cry out against their cheerleaders. It will cry out against any hand involved in this blood shed and every hand that supports it or try to cover it up. The sins you do today much be visited on you and your family. As that family weeps today, weeping will not be far from your home. It is unfortunate. I should not feel anything for the sufferings of Ndi Imo today. I warned you and today I sit back and say I told you so. But I cannot keep quiet and a young soul is lost because of a policy which would not have required police and army if an educated and well experienced human manager was in power. Today you have sent all your families away out of the state and country just in case of reprisal and killed this boy.  It is very unfortunate but mark it this day that the tears and weeping coming to your household still dey do pressup. Owerri people I am very ashamed of you. As you made your bed today you are lying on it.

Imo Politics: Ekeukwu Market Has Been Set Ablaze

News update:

During the late hours of today
25/8/2017, the Ekeukwu market was set ablaze by some owerri youths refusing to leave the market.
This is to the 48hour order and planned forceful relocation of Ekeukwu Owerri Market by the Imo State government tomorrow, Saturday August 26, 2017.

Army, Police, Civil Defense Block Douglas Road

The main issue is not whether relocating Ekeonunwa and sanitizing Douglas Road is a good policy. The issues are;

1. Has the government collaborated well with the stakeholders towards a timeline of actions and activities?

2. Have the traders been allocated shops in the new markets? Can they afford it? Who built the shop? Government or private developers?

If you stop one poor woman from displaying her wares and she goes to the new market and asked to pay N2Million to non-traders who now parade allocation papers or shops, is that not grave injustice? Soon their kids would  e going back to school, how would they cop? Planning and clarity of vision is the key here. Not a fire brigade approach.

The traders must be given allocations and standby ready shops to relocate. No family should ho hungry at this harsh economic weather arising from the poor planning of the relocation. Ndi Owerri Nchi Use must be adequately consulted and briefed of government plans. That's the only way government can win this argument.

Imo Politics: Which Area Of The Emergency Centers Did You Establish?

A concerned citizen of Imo State has this to say about the ISOPADEC funds:
"I watched the news yesterday on AIT and was disgusted when I heard Owelle speak on what ISOPADEC funds has been used for over the years. One of the things he mentioned was that he has built 16 emergency centers across OHAJI/EGBEMA & OGUTA LGAs. Then i ask.... Emergency centers on what? Security, health, jobs  or what?
No power(light) for over 6years and counting, no water,  jobs and yet massive embezzlement. We are industrious. In the days of Unishell, we saw what we could do. We just need a little support and we will push ourselves. People of OELGA & OGULGA, We need to wake up and take back our destiny LEGALLY.
The worse is that the he paralyzed all the people he appointed and because of little change, they can't speak up. Which way forward??? Forget partisan politics. I'm no politician, so I'm no opposition. I'm just a concerned citizen".

Imo Politic: Uche Nwosu Campaign Poster Is Out

See the campaign poster of the Imo State Son-in-law and chief of staff of Imo State, Dr. Uche Nwosu for the Governorship post in 2019.

The office and by extension, Imo Government House Social Media crew has denied this recent development, claming it's

"ubiquitous and unauthorized, fake campaign posters of the Chief of staff, Government Of Imo State,Ugwumba Dr. Uche Nwosu"

They also stated that Ugwumba Uche Nwosu has not publicly declared to contest the 2019 guber elections in the state as it is not yet time for political campaignings. He is by law, legible and will not fail to make known his intentions, if any, when the time comes. It is abysmally disdainful and cheap blackmail to preempt his decision as that would be ferocious, callous and dangerous at this time. There is time for everything!

Therefore, the public, fans and indeed, the entire Imo people at home and in diaspora should ignore completely, the said campaign posters. It is the handiwork of charlatans.
